Pressure group Elections Watch Ghana has described as bold the initiative by President John Dramani Mahama to establish the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee.
The committee, led by Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is to recover looted state funds and assets from past public office holders.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, Election Watch Ghana expressed confidence that “this operation will not only restore the nation’s wealth but also serve as a deterrent to potential corrupt officials”.
The group took issues with critics, particularly the Minority in Parliament, for their criticism of the committee.
“Their constant attacks and attempts to undermine the operation’s credibility only serve to expose their own fears and guilt,” the statement, jointly signed by convenors Mark Ewusi Arkoh and Jude Balma, said.
“We urge the minority to cooperate with ORAL and recognize the value of this operation in promoting transparency and accountability. Their posturing and grandstanding will not deter the Ghanaian people from demanding accountability and justice.”
It urged the Minority to support the mandate of the committee in its effort to fight corruption.
It also called on the Mahama-led government to empower ORAL with necessary resources and authority to discharge its mandate.
“This includes granting ORAL the power to ask the police to arrest individuals who refuse to appear when invited, ensuring that no one is above the law.
“Once again, we commend President Mahama for his vision and leadership in establishing ORAL. We wish ORAL well in its endeavors and look forward to seeing tangible results in the fight against corruption.”
