Engineer Theophilus Kodjo Dzimega Junior, a private legal practitioner and member of the NDC Communication Team, has criticised the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, over her demand for $10 million in compensation from the state, calling it unjustified and self-serving.

Dzimega Junior, in an interview on 3FM Sunrise on July 15, believes the Chief Justice’s actions have done more harm to her reputation than any external factor.

“No other person has damaged the reputation of the suspended Chief Justice more than the self-inflicted damage she has brought upon herself. She has descended into an arena of self-entitlement. Where the matter is going now, she is not fighting for the Judiciary but herself,” he said.

He argued that her suspension, pending an official inquiry, is no different from standard interdiction processes applied to other public officials under investigation, and does not in itself warrant financial compensation.

“The suspension is just like how somebody would be on interdiction, and should everybody who is on interdiction come out to say that I have been morally and reputationally damaged, so I need damages? No, it doesn’t work that way.” The Private Legal Practitioner stated.

Mr. Dzimega also justified the President’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, stating that her recent conduct vindicates the action taken against her.

“The President was right in suspending her. Look at the amount of fight she has put up, assuming she was still in office while the process was ongoing. What would she have done? Mr. Dzimega quizzed.

Details of the suit filed by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo at the ECOWAS Court have revealed the demand for a staggering $10 million in compensation for alleged moral and reputational damages. The Chief Justice’s extensive filing seeks a series of declarations and orders, fundamentally challenging the legitimacy of her suspension and the ongoing constitutional process for her potential removal from office.
