An eight-year-old boy, Adam Mujaheed, tragically drowned in an abandoned brick-making pit at Kubugu in the Mamprugu Moagduri District of the North East Region on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The incident occurred in Kubugu, a farming community, where Adam fell into an abandoned pit previously used for brick-making. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Adam visited the site with his schoolmates after school.

Why the children went to the scene and how Adam got into the pit is not known yet, however, community members report that the pit left uncovered and unattended, has become a significant hazard.

The location’s distance from the community delayed the children’s ability to seek help. NADMO regional and district officials, led by the North East regional coordinator Alhaji Tahiru Rafiu, together with the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Mamprugu Moagduri, Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Rahaman, and community members, visited the scene and rushed Adam to Kubori hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Upon receiving the devastating news, Adam’s mother fainted and required hospitalization, she has since recovered. The community has since buried Adam according to Islamic tradition.

This tragedy has brought renewed attention to the dangers posed by abandoned pits and other environmental hazards within the district. The incident also unfolds as the Mamprugu Moagduri District grapples with persistent flooding. Recent weeks have seen numerous communities affected by floods, resulting in the destruction of farms and properties.
The North East regional branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is currently conducting surveys to assess the extent of the damage and identify strategies for mitigating future flood impacts. Reports confirm that the area experiences annual flooding.
Alhaji Tahiru Rafiu is urging communities and individuals residing in flood-prone areas to adopt proactive safety measures and to adhere to NADMO’s guidance and evacuation instructions. He stressed the critical need for vigilance and preparedness to avert potential disasters.
