A collaborative security operation led by the Bunkpurugu Immigration Command has intercepted 118 bags of cocoa beans concealed beneath a shipment of plantains along the Bunkpurugu border road.
Two suspects are currently in police custody following the operation, which was initiated based on intelligence provided by the Regional National Security Coordinator.
According to official reports, the operation took place at approximately 17:30 GMT on August 9, 2026. Acting on intelligence provided by the North East Regional National Security Coordinator, Ernest Bawanin Guat, a multi-agency task force comprising the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, the National Security/Signal Bureau and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority mounted an operation along the Bunkpurugu border road.
The security team intercepted a Hyundai truck with registration number AS-3272-25. While the vehicle was ostensibly transporting plantains, a thorough search conducted at the Customs office revealed a sophisticated concealment method. Beneath the layer of plantains, officers discovered 118 bags of cocoa beans.
ACI Edwin Adejetey Doku, the Immigration Commander for Bunkpurugu-Nakpaduri District spearheaded the operation.
The intercepted cocoa, estimated at a total weight of 11,800 kilograms has been secured by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Two individuals identified as 23-year-old Ernestina Akugre and 19-year-old Mohammed Mumin have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently with the police to assist with investigations.
