Solomon Owusu, a leading member of the Movement for Change, has described the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “an irresponsible opposition”.

According to Owusu, NPP members argue for the sake of argument without considering current economic indicators.

Speaking on TV3’s BigIssue on the NewDay morning show, Owusu noted that while both the NPP and his Movement for Change are in opposition, the NPP’s behaviour leaves much to be desired.

“They are in opposition, the same way my Movement is in opposition. But Ghanaians must get the clear distinction. There is a responsible opposition, and an irresponsible opposition. These people are behaving as irresponsible opposition,” he said Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

He asserts that the facts and figures from the NDC era are better compared to the NPP’s entire 8 years in office, making him wonder what the NPP has been complaining about.

Analysing the inflation rate between the two administrations, amid a stabilised cedi against major trading currencies on the forex market, the Movement for Change member said the economy has been better managed by the incumbent administration so far.

“…because the facts are clear. Is it not true, as we speak today, inflation has reduced from 23.8% to 13.7%? This one how wuold you argue? Is it not true that exchange rate has stabilised? In fact, within the last four months, it has appreciated 42% against the dollar, 30% against the British pound and 25% against the Euro?” he quizzed.

He continued: “It’s a fact that producer price, non-food inflation and food inflation have reduced drastically. It’s a fact that the first quarter of the year has witnessed GDP growth of 5.3%? These are facts that you cannot argue.”

Since the NDC took over the reins of government, all economic indices, from foreign exchange to revenue mobilisation, fuel prices, inflation, and others, have seen significant improvement.

However, the NPP, which is in its seventh month in opposition, is taking credit for the achievements and criticising at the same time.

On one hand, the party claims the government is taking credit for its work, while on the other hand, it asserts that the achievements are artificial.

Meanwhile, others believe that time will be the ultimate decider as to whether the government’s successes so far are real or artificial.
