Solomon Owusu, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current stalwart of the Movement for Change, has said that the party in opposition is better for the fortunes of Ghana than being in government.
He believes that the NPP in opposition better helps Ghana’s economy to stabilise, which is why he wants every citizen to pray that they always stay in opposition to help the nation.
Owusu’s position comes on the back of the NPP’s claim that their policies are what have accounted for the stability the economy has recorded since the NDC took over the reins of power.
According to him, Ghana will be a better place if the NPP stays out of government and provides effective oversight from opposition.
“If their position is that all the things happening around this time were occasioned by their policies, then what it means is that it’s always good for the NPP to be in opposition,” he said on the BigIssue on TV3’s NewDay on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

He explained that “if you’re in opposition and your actions are leading to a stabilised economy, and you’re telling us that you’re managing the economy from opposition, then it means that the country must pray that you’re always in opposition.”
“Why must we pray that you come to power? We should rather pray that you’re always in opposition, so that you’ll aid in stabilising the economy; that’s the summary of what they’ve said,” he explained.
His comments come on the back of the NPP’s claim that they have made the economy stabilised due to the policies they put in place before leaving office.
Since the NDC took over the reins of government, all economic indices, from foreign exchange to revenue mobilisation, fuel prices, inflation, and others, have seen significant improvement.
However, the NPP, which is in its seventh month in opposition, is taking credit for the achievements and criticising at the same time.
On one hand, the party claims the government is taking credit for its work, while on the other hand, it asserts that the achievements are artificial.
But according to Owusu, if the NPP had anything better for the state, it would have shown during their tenure rather than now claiming credit for the efforts of the government.
Analysing the inflation rate between the two administrations, amid a stabilised cedi against major trading currencies on the forex market, the Movement for Change member said the economy has been better managed by the incumbent administration so far.
“…because the facts are clear. Is it not true, as we speak today, inflation has reduced from 23.8% to 13.7%? This one how wuold you argue? Is it not true that exchange rate has stabilised? In fact, within the last four months, it has appreciated 42% against the dollar, 30% against the British pound and 25% against the Euro?” he quizzed.
He continued: “It’s a fact that producer price, non-food inflation and food inflation have reduced drastically. It’s a fact that the first quarter of the year has witnessed GDP growth of 5.3%? These are facts that you cannot argue.”
Meanwhile, others believe that time will be the ultimate decider as to whether the government’s successes so far are real or artificial.
