The Ghana Police Service has announced some roads that will be temporarily closed ahead of the state funeral celebration for six of the eight victims who died in the Wednesday, August 6, 2025, helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti region.
According to the police, there will also be traffic diversions and parking arrangements for the inter-denominational and inter-faith state event for the crash victims, slated for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra.
Police say the measures is to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management as contained in a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service.
Road Closures
The following roads will be closed to traffic during the event:
- 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on the Lokko Street.
- Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
- Starlet 91 Road, closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.
Traffic Diversions
Motorists are advised to take note of these diversions:
- Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street.
- Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
- Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.
- Traffic from the AU Circle towards Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted to Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to join Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
Approved Parking Areas
Only vehicles with approved windscreen entry stickers — specifically RED stickers with VVIP inscription — will be allowed entry into the Black Star Square arena and parking zones. The designated parking areas include:
- VVIP, VIP – Black Star Square
- Forecourt of the State House
- International Conference Centre
- Access Bank Car Park
- Osu Cemetery Car Park
- Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
- Ministries Area
- Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park
- Marine Drive Football Park
- Afua Sutherland Car Park
Towing and Recovery Operations
The police also warned that they will not allow any vehicle to park at an unauthorised area or drive through restricted zones, stating that towing and recovery trucks have will be available to take off all disabled, abandoned and wrongly parked vehicles in and around the event venue.
They urged the public, particularly motorists to fully cooperate with the police and the other security agencies for effective traffic management during the event.
