Ballot papers for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, have arrived safely at the Akwatia Divisional Police Command under tight security.
Representatives of the two participating political parties; the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were present to inspect the ballot papers and other essential electoral materials.
The inspection process, which involved verifying the serial numbers on sealed bags and ballot papers, was carried out jointly by Electoral Commission officials and party representatives.
After verification, the materials were securely resealed and kept under police protection, ensuring transparency and integrity ahead of the polls.

Meanwhile security has been heightened across the constituency. Police have mounted roadblocks and are checking all vehicles entering the area to maintain order and ensure a peaceful election.
The Eastern Region Electoral Director, John Appiah Baffoe confirmed that a total of 52,328 voters are expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations during the by-election on September 2.
The Akwatia by election has been necessitated by the death of Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

In the 2024 general elections, the late MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, won the seat with 19,269 votes against NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye who pulled 17,206 votes. The win by the NPP was contested by the NDC in the court until the MP’s demise.
In the September 2, election both the NDC and the NPP will be represented by new candidates who would be contesting each other for the first time.
The Akwatia Constituency has been a swing seat, alternating between NDC and NPP since its split from the Kwaebibirem District to Denkyembour district in 2012.
