The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on authorities to prioritise the lives of those who were injured in the military recruitment stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

The Speaker has called for a complete overhaul of the processes that guide employment into the security services, and the entire public sector as a whole.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, claimed six lives, leaving 12 in critical condition and 10 others injured, making a total of 28 casualties.

According to Speaker Bagbin, the incident could have been prevented if adequate safety and organisational protocols had been put in place during the process.

Mr. Bagbin was speaking after visiting the victims who had been admitted at the 37 Military Hospital.

The Speaker, addressing the media after his visit, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, while urging all stakeholders to ensure such a disaster does not recur in the future.

“We can rethink this whole process of recruitment and enlistment, even the entire system of how we employ people into the public sector, to prevent future occurrences,” he said.

“We are saddened and shocked. This is a day no Ghanaian would ever wish to see repeated. But we must all work together—this is not the responsibility of one person or institution alone. Our focus should be on preventing similar tragedies and, more immediately, on saving the lives of those who are injured.”
