Private legal practitioner, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini, has questioned the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), with regards to the issues that has marred the functioning of the anti-graft institution since its establishment.

Suhuyini believes the creators of the Office had a reason for setting up the state agency under the pretense of fighting corruption in the country.

According to him, the OSP, instead of helping curb the canker of rot, has rather aided political appointees and other public office holders to loot the state, making it an agent of fostering the menace rather than fighting it.

Speaking on TV3’s current affairs show, The KeyPoints, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Suhuyini recounted the challenges the first Special Prosecutor (SP), Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu, faced with the then President, which eventually led to his resignation.

Suhuyini added that the current SP, William Kissi Agyebeng, having complained of the non-cooperation of other state institutions, shows how the Office has lost focus and rather aiding graft, instead of fighting it.

Aside the challenges Amidu faced, which made him describe former President Akufo-Addo as “mother serpent of corruption” and resigning eventually, Suhuyini said “he (Amidu) also enumerated difficulties that were deliberately placed on his way that made it very difficult to work as an independent office.”

“Today, Kissi is also telling us the same thing. He also says that other state institutions are not cooperating. H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made it practically impossible for him to be independent.”

The developments and characterisation of the Office by its occupants, Suhuyini noted, “bring us to the question, that is that office truly independent and is it necessary?”

The Communications team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) concluded that it rather shows the opposite.

“For me, if I look at the composition and stature of that office in our politics today, I feel that the office is more obstructive to our quest for accountability rather than helping the fight.”

He cited the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) revenue mobilisation contract with Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), saying the Attorney-General’s (A-G) office has been crippled from taking on the matter, since the OSP is already dealing with it.

Meanwhile, Suhuyini expressed concern that political accountability will be placed on the Office of the A-G, rather than the OSP, which is hindering the fight against corruption.

“…the SML case, the A-G’s office will be tight. They cannot be seen dealing with this case because the OSP is already dealing with it. Meanwhile, issues of political accountability will be on the doorstep of the A-G whom Ghanaians are demanding accountability from.”
