Foreigners trading in retail markets reserved for Ghanaians in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) should from Monday, December 15, 2025, start packing their wares.

This is because the taskforce formed by the KMA to get rid of non-Ghanaians operating in these markets is expected to begin work .

Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Head of Public Relations Department, KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, said this forms part of measures by the Assembly to safeguard the sector reserved for indigenes according to the country’s investments laws.

The taskforce is made up of officers from GIPC, Immigration, Police and others from the Registrar General’s Department, the Ghana Investment Promotion Center, the Ghana Revenue Authority, Police, Immigration Service and others.

She was optimistic of a successful exercise. “We hope that the grace period would have served the purpose of making them willing remove themselves from the market. What we are saying is that , they can move and establish themselves outside the retail markets as those are reserved for Ghanaians” she observed.

Last week KMA directed the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) to immediately suspend the locking of shops operated by foreign nationals engaged in retail trad.

The directive followed a closed-door meeting between the Assembly and the leadership of GUTA aimed at easing tensions between local traders and foreign retailers in the city.

Mrs Aboagye acknowledged GUTA’s concerns about what it described as the increasing encroachment of foreign nationals into the local retail space, in violation of Ghana’s trade laws.

She assured GUTA that the Assembly was committed to addressing the issue through lawful means.
