Residents of Babili in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region are calling for the immediate operationalisation of an abandoned fire station which has been left in a bush.
According to the residents, the place has become a gathering spot for miscreants.
The fire station, which was completed five years ago, after work commenced in 2020, was never commissioned due to unknown reasons, despite the area recording a series of fire disasters.
This has left the place to the mercy of the harsh weather, paving the way for overgrown weeds, reptiles, and other creatures to inhabit the building.
Despite the area recording several fire disasters, with no fire posts and a terrible road network, one would have expected to see the facility fully utilised.
The Regent of Babili, Vitus Kadoe Dapilah, said several attempts were made by the youth of Babili, including furnishing the facility, but to no avail.
“The community youth did several follow-ups, including the area council procuring chairs and mattresses for the office, but yielded negative results”, he worriedly stated.
Alex Yirkye, former assembly member for Babili electoral area, calls on duty bearers to come to their aid.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Lawra, Soyelle Cecilia Nuratu, who spoke on the sidelines of marking the first national sanitation day for the year 2026, at Babili assured of her fullest support to make the place operational.

“We will try to work out, taking the guidelines from the legacy projects. And we repackage it to see what needs to be done, ” she stated.
Bede Ziedeng, Member of Parliament for Lawra Constituency, who participated in the clean-up exercise, described the project as “an incomplete project” which he promised to complete, including conducting an assessment of the facility.

“It is an important facility, and there is no way that we will sit idly by and allow it to go to waste”, he added.
