EL, an award-winning rapper and producer from Ghana, has advised artistes not to go into record label deals without adequate knowledge and expert advice.
In an interview on Accra-based Hitz FM, Tuesday, the musician described signing record deals without giving it much thought “savage” and strongly encouraged talented musicians to stay clear of such blunders.
He asserted that his own experience with a record deal compelled him to take a break from music for a while as he battled to get out of a difficult circumstance.
“I wouldn’t advise anybody to sign a record deal blindly,” he said.
“From my experience, I found myself in a situation that made me go quiet for a while because I had to untangle myself and come out safely. I realised that I had taken a bigger step by signing some things, and later it wasn’t really what I thought it would be,” EL noted.
EL clarified that inadequate documentation and representation might lead to major issues for artistes.
He emphasised the importance of having legal counsel, accurate documentation, and complete understanding of what is being offered, before signing any agreement.
“It could get really sticky if you’re not careful,” he noted.
The rapper further disclosed that his creative freedom was formerly impacted by contractual disputes and issues that kept him from releasing some songs he wanted.
He cautioned that some people in the field would try to take advantage of young potential for their own benefit.
“There are sharks out there who want to trap you, exploit your music, and leave you hanging,” he cautioned.
His advice to up-and-coming musicians is to safeguard themselves and carefully consider any contract before signing with a record label.
