The Northern Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed narcotic drugs valued at an estimated GH¢2.5 million in a decisive move to promote public safety and uphold justice in the region.

The destroyed substances included boxes of Tafrado 120mg, Tramaking, blisters of Tramadol, boxes of Royal 225mg, and quantities of marijuana. The drugs were exhibits previously kept at the Registry of the Circuit Court in Tamale.

The destruction exercise followed a court order issued by His Honour Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire, a Circuit Court Judge, after the successful prosecution of individuals involved in trafficking the illicit substances.

The disposal took place at the Gbalahi Landfill site near Tamale and was witnessed by representatives from key state agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, as well as members of the media.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Issahaque Bakuri, Northern Regional Commander of NACOC, said the exercise formed part of intensified efforts to clamp down on the smuggling and abuse of illicit drugs in the country.

“We are taking frantic measures to combat drug abuse and promote a healthier society in the region and the country at large,” he stated.

Mr. Bakuri disclosed that security personnel have been deployed to entry points across the region, with enhanced surveillance at both approved and unapproved routes to curb the inflow of narcotics.

He also encouraged individuals struggling with drug addiction to seek counselling and rehabilitation support, stressing the Commission’s commitment to tackling the drug menace through both enforcement and preventive measures.
