The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has called for an urgent meeting with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over widespread media reports and public complaints alleging rapid depletion of prepaid electricity units.
Following the implementation of the recent tariff adjustment under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), many Ghanaians have raised concerns about how fast the prepaid units get depleted after purchasing.
The Commission said it has taken note of the nationwide concerns and has summoned the Managing Director of ECG for a meeting on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 12:00 noon at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra to address the concerns.
The MD has been directed to appear at the meeting with the appropriate Technical, Commercial, ICT, and Customer Service leads to ensure a complete and authoritative engagement.
The agenda for the meeting is as follows; comprehensive technical briefing on the implementation of the revised tariff within the prepaid vending and metering architecture; report on review of system parameter, configuration, or conversion logic changes undertaken in connection with the MYTO adjustment; report on vending data trends and meter update protocols.
The meeting will also discuss matters such as a report on scale and nature of consumer complaints and current resolution measures and brief on immediate technical and communication interventions, where required, to safeguard consumer confidence and regulatory compliance.
