President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct three new technical universities as part of efforts to strengthen skills development and improve conditions in the education sector.
Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, Friday, February 27, President Mahama said the expansion of technical universities will help address the country’s skills gap and tackle youth unemployment.
He explained that technical universities play a critical role in equipping young people with industry-relevant and practice-oriented skills that align with national development priorities.
“Technical universities play a critical role in closing the skills gap and reducing youth unemployment by delivering high-quality, industry-aligned and practice-oriented training within a broader policy framework that stimulates labour demand,” he stated.
According to the President, the new institutions will enhance innovation, support industrialisation and prepare Ghana’s workforce to meet the demands of a modern economy.
In addition to expanding technical education, President Mahama also announced that 50,000 housing units will be built for teachers. This initiative is aimed at improving the welfare and retention of educators, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
The housing programme, which seeks to deliver 50,000 housing units, is a joint effort involving the District Assemblies Common Fund, GETFund, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers, among other stakeholders.
He said the initiative is intended to enhance teachers’ living conditions and ensure they can serve effectively and retire with dignity.
“This partnership demonstrates our collective dedication to enhancing teachers’ living conditions and boosting retention, especially in rural and remote areas,” President Mahama noted.
The announcement forms part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen human capital development, reduce unemployment and support Ghana’s long-term economic transformation through education and skills training.
