The Platform for Elite Teachers Association has endorsed Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President, as its preferred candidate to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 presidential election.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, the National President of the group, Samuel Owusu Kankam, described Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as a leader who embodies competence, integrity and vision, urging the party to consider her for the flagbearer position ahead of the next general elections.
The group indicated, the Vice President and former academic, possesses the qualities required to lead both the party and the country.
“She is presentable, knowledgeable, praiseworthy and financially sound. She is a woman of substance,” Mr Kankam told journalists, adding that her performance in public office over the past year has earned her admiration.
The teacher group emphasized that the endorsement was an independent decision by the Association and not influenced by the former Vice-Chancellor.
“This is about preparing for the future. Leadership is about foresight. We believe we must begin to shape the conversation now.”
Mr. Kankam maintained that political leadership should be driven by competence and service rather than gender stereotypes. He noted that politicians are ultimately servants of the people and must be prepared to deliver.
“We are the grassroots. Leaders come to serve us. If they serve well, they earn the respect and loyalty of the people,” he stated.
He called on the leadership of the NDC and party delegates, to “think twice” and consider what he described as the long-term interest of the party when selecting its next flagbearer.
The Platform for Elite Teachers Association says it will embark on engagements and educational campaigns to sensitize party members and the broader electorate on what it describes as the qualities of effective leadership.
The NDC is yet to officially open nominations for its 2028 presidential primary.
