The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has welcomed the return of peace to the Sunyani Traditional Area, calling it a “major step toward renewed development and investment” in the municipality.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Sunyani Traditional Council on Thursday, 5th March 2026, Ibrahim said the newly restored calm creates a conducive environment for business activities and enables government to effectively implement its development agenda in the area.
The chieftaincy dispute, which pitted two factions aligned with the Paramount Chief and the Paramount Queenmother, had lingered for some time, fracturing unity in the traditional area.

The Ministry intervened using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, blending traditional and administrative approaches to bring the parties together.
According to the Minister, both sides have begun implementing a mutually agreed roadmap aimed at sustaining the peace process. He described the development as “encouraging for the future of the traditional area,” noting that traditional authorities are critical partners in governance.

“Without their cooperation and support, it becomes difficult to achieve meaningful development at the local level,” Minister Ibrahim emphasized, adding that the renewed unity is a welcome development for government and the people of Sunyani.

He commended the leadership of the traditional area for prioritizing peace and urged them to remain committed to the outlined roadmap for lasting harmony. He also reiterated government’s continued support for development initiatives in Sunyani.
On behalf of the traditional authorities, the President of the Sunyani Traditional Council and Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, Mr Ibrahim, and the Ministry for their intervention.
The Paramount Queenmother of Sunyani also conveyed her appreciation, noting that the restoration of peace has brought relief to residents, including non-indigenes living and working in the municipality. Both the Paramount Chief and Paramount Queenmother assured the Minister of their commitment to work together in unity and promote peace and development within the Sunyani Traditional Area.
