The Ministry of Local Government has issued a one-week ultimatum to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to remove all unauthorized billboards across Greater Accra Region, as part of a renewed push to restore urban order and improve the capital’s visual appeal.
The directive was announced by Deputy Minister for Local Government, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, during an inspection tour of parts of Accra.
She expressed concern over the increasing number of unregulated advertising structures, warning that their proliferation is not only distorting the city’s landscape but also posing safety risks to residents.
According to the Deputy Minister, local authorities have been tasked to act swiftly within the one-week window or face further directives as government intensifies efforts to sanitize the capital.
The move has been welcomed by industry players. Reacting to the announcement, the Advertising Association of Ghana described the intervention as both timely and necessary.
Executive Director Isaac Cudjoe said the initiative is long overdue and commended government for engaging stakeholders and creating awareness around the need to regulate the advertising space.
However, he stressed that the success of the exercise will depend largely on consistent and firm enforcement.
The directive forms part of a broader urban development agenda aimed at transforming Accra into a cleaner, more organized, and globally competitive city.
