The Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) has joined the global community to celebrate 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), urging stronger support for women and greater awareness of critical health conditions affecting them.
Commemorating this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” the union emphasized that supporting women ultimately benefits society as a whole.
“This theme reminds us that when we give our support, our time, and our care, we all gain a stronger, fairer society,” the union said in its International Women’s Day message.
HSWU paid tribute to women working across Ghana’s health sector, particularly those serving in hospitals and clinics.
“We celebrate the women in our hospitals and clinics — nurses, midwives, laboratory professionals, administrators and caregivers who work day and night to save lives,” the statement noted.
Beyond the health sector, the union also recognized the contributions of women in informal and community roles.
“We also celebrate the women in our markets, on our farms, in our homes and in our communities, whose daily sacrifices keep families fed, economies moving and society thriving,” the union added.
According to HSWU, women across all sectors continue to demonstrate resilience and dedication in building the nation.
“Wherever women are — in hospitals, offices, markets, farms or homes — they continue to build our nation with strength and resilience,” the statement said.
However, the union stressed that the celebration must also bring attention to women’s health challenges, particularly conditions that are often overlooked or misunderstood.
One such condition highlighted is , which the union described as a serious health issue affecting many women.
“Too many women suffer silently from conditions that are misunderstood or ignored. One of these is Endometriosis — a condition that causes severe pain, emotional stress and sometimes infertility,” the statement said. “Many women live with it for years without proper diagnosis or treatment.”
To promote awareness, the union announced an online public discussion on the condition. The session will feature of iSecorm Medical and Fertility Centre.
The virtual discussion, which will focus on endometriosis and infertility, is scheduled to take place via Zoom on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 4:30 p.m.
“He will help participants understand the symptoms, causes and the steps women can take if they suspect this condition,” the union said.
The HSWU is inviting workers, families and community members to participate in the session, stressing that collective awareness can improve health outcomes for women.
“When women understand their bodies, they can seek help early. When families understand, they can offer support. And when society understands, stigma is removed and women are empowered,” the union said.
The union also used the occasion to send a message of encouragement to women across the country.
“Your work matters. Your health matters. Your voice matters,” the statement emphasized.
Reiterating the importance of the 2026 theme, the union said meaningful support for women would ultimately benefit the entire society.
“When we give women the support they deserve, we all gain a healthier, stronger and more equal society,” the statement concluded.
