The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed the need to put women in strategic positions to foster national development.

She says the influence of women, with their roles in handling portfolios in national architecture, impacts development and should be encouraged in public offices for the nation’s progress.

In a statement issued on her Facebook page to mark the commemoration of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the Vice President said the Ghanaian woman’s actions and contributions towards nation building are already anchored in the nation’s theme for this year’s celebration.

She added that Ghana’s vision of securing at least 30 per cent of government appointments signifies the nation’s readiness to embrace holistic development.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged Ghanaian women to be proud of their immense contribution towards building the nation so far.

“Let us be proud of the resilience, achievements, and essential contributions women continue to make to our nation’s progress.

“In Ghana, the theme “Giving to Gain” is already demonstrated through concrete actions. The intentional effort to ensure women make up at least 30% of government appointments recognizes a simple truth about national development: when women serve as ministers, lead key public institutions, and help shape policy at the highest levels, the country benefits from a broader range of talent and perspective,” she stated.

She further indicated that the 30 per cent portfolio for women in offices should go beyond government appointments to other spheres of society.

“But the principle goes beyond government institutions. In business, academia, civil society, the creative industries, faith leadership, and other sectors, expanding opportunities for women enhances our national life and increases the pool of leadership that we rely on.”

On this International Women’s Day 2026, I send heartfelt greetings to all women and girls across Ghana and around the world. Let us be proud of the resilience, achievements, and essential contributions women continue to make to our nation’s progress.

Empowering women is not just a favor; it is a strategic investment in better governance and a more confident Ghana.
