Leticia Asante, mother of former Defence Minister, the late Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has expressed gratitude to Government and Ghanaians for the support shown her after the death of her only son.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Obomeng in the Eastern Region, on the sidelines of a solemn ceremony held for the unveiling of the Dr Edward Omane Boamah Artificial Intelligence Training Facility, a state-of-the-art centre aimed at advancing digital skills and bridging the technological gap among Ghanaian youth.
She said although the period has been difficult for her following the passing of her son, the honour being accorded him was consoling.
The facility, named in honour of the late Defence Minister, is expected to continue the legacy he was passionate about, which is equipping young people with future-ready skills in technology and governance.
Madam Asante shared how President Mahama and Ghanaians have all shown her love amid the “tough” times.
“I am glad. Since we lost him, a lot of people have been of help. They have honoured him. I thank you all. I thank the President. I know the Lord will console me because it is really tough,” she was grateful.
“He was my only son who was a medical doctor and ventured into politics because of the love for his country Ghana. Thank you Ghana for showing up and honouring my son,” she added.
President Mahama, together with traditional leaders, former Cabinet colleagues and key players in the technology sector, all graced the occasion.
Dr. Omane Boamah died in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, with seven other people while on official duty.
The aircraft, a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter, was travelling from Accra to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining engagement when it went down in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
