In a significant move to bolster safety measures on the Bui Dam, the National Disaster Management Organization’s Bono Regional Directorate has donated 115 high-visibility life jackets to the fishing communities and residents of Banda-Bongase in the Banda District.
The presentation ceremony, led by Regional Director Fati Kine Lam, provided reflective life jackets designed for both adults and children, aimed at safeguarding the lives of fishermen, market women, and commuters who regularly navigate the river.
The donation event took place at the Banda-Bongase boat landing beach, attended by prominent figures including Banda District Chief Executive Peter Dongi and other NADMO officials.
During her address, Mrs. Kine Lam reinforced the government’s dedication to protecting lives and supporting the fishing communities across the region, highlighting that the safety of individuals is of utmost importance.
She underscored that disaster management involves both responsive actions and proactive prevention strategies.
Mrs. Kine Lam urged all beneficiaries to wear their life jackets whenever on the river and called for enhanced collaboration between the Banda District Assembly and the Banda Traditional Council to enforce stringent safety measures on the water.
In a show of appreciation, area committee chairman Yusif Dauda expressed gratitude to NADMO on behalf of the beneficiaries. He assured the organization of the community’s commitment to following safety protocols and disaster prevention guidelines.
Mr. Dauda also appealed to non-governmental organizations, the Banda District Assembly, and other stakeholders for additional life jackets, noting that nearly 2,000 locals rely on river transport and fishing activities in the region.
The initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring safety and preventing tragedies in the waterways, enhancing the resilience of the communities that depend on these vital resources.
