Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that Ghana and South Korea will this year open a new university in Ghana, establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant and launch new solar-powered irrigation systems to support agricultural development.
The Minister said both countries have also agreed to deepen collaboration in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and critical minerals, while pursuing new partnerships in the energy sector.
Ablakwa announced the significant progress in Ghana’s bilateral relations with South Korea during the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea.
“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana; establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana and launch new solar irrigation systems,” he wrote on Facebook, June 2, 2026.

According to the Minister, Ghana and South Korea have significant bilateral projects in the energy, agriculture, maritime, education, ship manufacturing, roads and health sectors.
He noted that discussions aimed at expanding visa-free travel arrangements between Ghana and South Korea are advancing steadily.
According to him, negotiations on a comprehensive visa waiver agreement covering all categories of passports are progressing well, with agreements already secured for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
Ablakwa further revealed that he used the occasion to commend South Korea for supporting Ghana’s landmark resolution at the United Nations declaring the transatlantic enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
He described South Korea as a trusted partner and underscored the importance of strengthening ties between Africa and Asia through mutually beneficial cooperation.
The Minister also expressed optimism about the future of relations between the two countries as they prepare to mark a major diplomatic milestone next year.
“We look forward to commemorating 50 years of formal diplomatic relations next year,” he stated.
He said Africa and the Republic of Korea have a shared colonial history and are determined to forge a new mutually beneficial partnership which transforms nations and creates opportunities for citizens of the two countries.
