The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed the consolidated cases challenging the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Four cases filed by Tafo MP Vincent Assafuah and private citizen Theodore Atta Quartey as well as Gertrude Torkornoo and Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems were consolidated into two cases.

The cases were filed in 2025 following the suspension of then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after a prima facie from three petitions seeking her removal was established.

On Thursday, July 2, 2026, a 7-member panel presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko held that the suits challenging her removal lacked merit and consequently dismissed them.

The judgement of the apex court effectively brings to finality the challenge of the former Chief Justice’s removal from office.

In June, another action filed by Justice Gertude Torkornoo at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice citing human right violations and a $10million compensation was also dismissed.
