The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that the government paid GH¢107 million in allowances to 9,090 assembly members across the country in 2025.
Appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Assurances on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Minister said the payment exceeded the GH¢100 million allocation promised by President John Dramani Mahama in the 2025 Budget.
“The President promised GH¢100 million in the budget for 2025. By December 31, 2025, the President had paid GH¢107 million to all the Assembly Members in the country and each Assembly Member, all the 9,090 Assembly Members, was given GH¢1,300 each,” he stated.
Mr. Ibrahim said the funds were transferred directly to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for disbursement to beneficiaries immediately after they were released by the Ministry of Finance.
“I made sure that the money did not spend a day in my Ministry. Once the Finance Minister brings it, I gave an order to the Financial Controller to send it to all the 261 MMDAs to pay. So, it is being paid on a quarterly basis,” he explained.
The Minister further revealed that allowances for the first quarter of 2026 had also been released and forwarded for payment.
“The one for 2026, the first quarter was released this week and as at yesterday, I gave an order to the Financial Controller to send it to the Assembly Members. So, we are on track when it comes to the payment of Assembly Members,” he added.
Mr. Ibrahim said the timely release of the allowances demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting assembly members, who play a key role in local governance and community development across the country.
