The Minister for Local Government, Chieftency and Religious affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim has assured Members of the Assurances Committee that safety features will be integral to the reconstruction of the kantamanto and Kwadaso Wood Village Markets.
Representing his Ministry at the Assurances Committee public hearing in Parliament, Ahmed Ibrahim disclosed that following the fires that destroyed the markets, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Ghana Fire Service and other key stakeholders quickly cleared the debris and assessed damages to ensure public safety.
According to the Local Government Minister, Plans are underway to rebuild these markets with enhanced fire safety measures, including fire extinguishers and smoke detectors, to prevent future incidents.
He was not the only minister to have appeared before the committee.
The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, also appeared.
He stated that Ghana is driving its climate goals forward through the National Energy Transition Framework, updated Renewable Energy Master Plan, and Nationally Determined Contributions.
According to the Minister, his Ministry is also leveraging on key international partnerships like the Just Energy Transition Partnership, the Vulnerable Twenty, and the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa.
He indicated that there is a strong focus on a “Just Energy Transition” ensuring a gender-responsive planning, protection for vulnerable communities, local job creation, climate finance justice and fair participation in the green economy are central to the process.
He made it known to the Committee that Government is committed to making Ghana’s shift to a low-carbon future not only environmentally sustainable but also economically inclusive and socially equitable
