Two people have died while six others have sustained various degrees of injuries following a head on collision on the Suhum–Kumasi highway.
The six survivors are currently receiving treatment at Hawa Government Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The Eastern Regional Fire Service Public Relations Officer, D01 Aaron Adu Ohemeng confirmed that the crash, which occurred on Monday morning at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway, involved five vehicles and caused a major disruption to traffic flow.
The severity of the crash has overwhelmed traffic management efforts, prompting the Eastern South Regional Police Command to activate emergency diversion routes.
Accra bound motorists are being diverted through Kibi via Nsutam, while Kumasi bound traffic is being rerouted through Apedwa.
Motorists have been urged to cooperate with police officers on the ground and use the designated diversion routes as emergency responders work to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
The Police Service is investigating the cause of the crash.
The Birimso Bridge stretch has recorded several road crashes in the past, with speeding by motorists often cited as a contributing factor.
