The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has entered into a partnership with MountCrest University College to provide scholarships for fifty students from the constituency.
The partnership is aimed at expanding access to higher education and creating new opportunities for young people.
The partnership is under MountCrest University College’s “50-for-50” Scholarship Scheme, which covers LLB (Law), BSc, Public Health / Health Services Management and BSc, Business Administration (Accounting and Banking & Finance options).
The initiative, according to the management of MountCrest, reflects its longstanding commitment to rigorous tertiary education and producing graduates, who are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development and beyond.
Speaking at a meeting between the management of MountCrest and Baba Jamal to cement the partnership, the Rector of the school, Prof. Helen Yitah said the scholarship scheme is in line with the university college’s efforts to extend “the MountCrest educational experience into areas of significant national and professional importance”.
“An important part of MountCrest’s corporate social responsibility is to build meaningful partnerships with our surrounding communities and expand access to quality tertiary education for talented and deserving individuals within those communities,” she pointed out.
The Founder of MountCrest University College and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Mr. Kwaku Ansa-Asare emphasised the importance of the initiative, saying education is one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering communities.
For many Ghanaians, the mention of Nima, which is in the Ayawaso East Constituency, often evokes images of violence, congestion and poor sanitation but the MP says it is time to rewrite that narrative by leveraging the constituency’s strategic position as home to several key government institutions and corporate organizations, hence the partnership with MountCrest.
The Ayawaso East Constituency is home to some of Ghana’s most important public institutions and corporate headquarters, yet much of the public conversation around the constituency continues to centre on Nima’s longstanding social challenges.
Baba Jamal noted that one of the surest ways to change that perception is education, which is also one of the key drivers for transforming the community.
He described the partnership with MountCrest under the “50-for-50 Scholarship Scheme” as the beginning of a broader agenda to invest in the constituency’s human capital.
“On my part as the Member of Parliament, I will ensure that I meet the prospective beneficiaries halfway so that students who are interested but cannot afford, will be supported to educate themselves and become professionals, who will work for themselves, for their community and for mother Ghana. I can assure you that I am fully committed to ensuring that this initiative comes to fruition,” he said.
He stressed that the constituency’s proximity to major institutions presents opportunities that should directly benefit residents, particularly the youth.
He said his office will continue to engage public agencies, private institutions and development partners to create more educational, economic and social opportunities capable of reshaping the image of Nima.
