The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work on the Sunyani-Atronie-Acherensua road, warning officials responsible for monitoring contractors that their jobs could be at risk if performance does not improve.
The Minister issued the warning during an inspection of the Sunyani-Atronie-Acherensua road on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 where he discovered that the contractor was not on site working on the project.
He said he was disappointed not to find active construction work taking place at the project site by Alexiboam Construction Limited, the company in charge of the project.
“This is Alexiboam’s site. What is happening? It is 11:00, how come I am not seeing anybody here and all the trucks and equipment working actively on this section?” he questioned.
He criticised what he described as a culture where some contractors secure government projects but fail to actively work on site, rather blaming delays on non-payment.
The Minister questioned whether any of the contractors absent from site could genuinely claim they have not been paid.
“You are here representing the state, we spent a lot of money on these things and we have a deadline. This culture where contractors take a job and be parading on the corridors of power and not working and only be talking about non-payment.
“Which of these contractors can tell me that the reason they are not on site today is because they have not been paid,” he bemoaned.
Expressing his frustration with officials responsible for supervising the projects, the Minister warned that poor performance would have consequences.
“So, Director, I am not impressed today. Your job is not safe. I am not talking to you alone, i am talking to all my Regional Directors for Urban roads, Feeder roads and Highways. There is lack of performance.
“You better explain to me why yourself and Urban Roads directors, including Engineer Adomah and your teams in the regions, are not living up to expectations,” he warned.
The Minister further raised concerns that some contractors may be receiving advance notice of his inspection schedules by persons in his team and preparing their sites specifically for his visits.
He said his unannounced inspections and independent monitoring exercises had sometimes revealed a different result from the reports submitted by officials.
“I know that anytime I say I am going to inspect, some people working with me share the itinerary with the contractors and they prepare to receive me. When I go to the site alone and do a lot without your knowledge, I don’t see them working,” he said.
The Minister disclosed that he recently dispatched an independent team to inspect road projects in the Eastern, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions, adding that the findings were significantly different from the positive reports submitted by some regional representatives.
“I sent a team independently to Eastern Region, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Region last week and if I share the report with you, you will not be happy,” he said.
