Bia Lamplighter College of Education in the Bia West district of the Western North region is set to receive a new two-storey female dormitory to help address accommodation challenges facing students of the college.
The project, funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) under the Ministry of Education, is expected to be completed within one and a half years.
The two-storey facility will comprise 12 rooms on the ground floor, 21 rooms on the first floor and another 21 rooms on the second floor. The building will also have washrooms and other essential facilities, including a lift to improve accessibility for students.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, said funding had sometimes been a major factor contributing to delays in the implementation of government projects.
He, however, stated that under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, funding for government projects is no longer a challenge to contractors.
According to him, there is always funding available for projects being undertaken through both the District Assemblies Common Fund and GETFund, and contractors should therefore not have cause to complain about a lack of funds.
The Regional Minister stressed that authorities responsible for oversight must ensure that contractors execute projects according to the agreed specifications and timelines.
He said the Western North Regional Coordinating Council would work closely with the contractor to ensure that the project is completed on schedule.
Mr. Brentum also assured the contractor of the Regional Coordinating Council’s support and said the necessary assistance would be provided to facilitate the timely completion of the project.
The project engineer of Stardush Company Limited, Mr. Joseph Pokortsey, said the contract duration was one and a half years and that the completed facility would subsequently be handed over to GETFund.
Mr. Pokortsey disclosed that the company had accumulated a backlog of approximately four months but was working to clear the backlog and catch up with the project schedule.
He said the project had so far reached about 40 per cent completion.
The facility is therefore expected to increase the college’s accommodation capacity and provide improved living conditions for students.
