The Ghana Air Force has taken over security responsibilities at the Presidency from the Ghana Navy following the 49th Ceremonial Changing of the Guard Parade held on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The ceremony was presided over by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and marked the formal transfer of guard duties from the Ghana Navy to the Ghana Air Force for the next three months.
The Changing of the Guard is a longstanding military tradition at the Presidency through which security responsibility at the seat of government is rotated every three months among the three services of the Ghana Armed Forces the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force.
The latest ceremony brought the Ghana Navy’s period of responsibility to an end and formally ushered in the Ghana Air Force as the new guard responsible for security at the Presidency.
The event was attended by government officials, members of the security services and a number of schoolchildren, who gathered to witness the formal military ceremony and the colourful displays that accompanied the handover.
Among those present were the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, Minister for the Interior, Mutanka Mohammed Mubarak, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
The ceremony was characterised by discipline, precision drills, military band performances and colourful ceremonial displays, reflecting national pride and the professionalism of Ghana’s Armed Forces.
As part of the proceedings, the Ghana Navy formally handed over its responsibilities to the Ghana Air Force in a well-coordinated parade.
Personnel from the outgoing and incoming contingents participated in the ceremonial drills, demonstrating the precision, discipline and coordination required in the performance of military duties.
The military band also formed an important part of the ceremony, providing musical accompaniment to the parade and adding colour and pageantry to the formal transfer of responsibility.
The Changing of the Guard serves as both a symbolic and practical exercise. While it represents the orderly transfer of responsibility from one military service to another, it also ensures continuity in the security arrangements at the Presidency.
The personnel assigned to the guard are therefore expected to maintain a high level of discipline, alertness and professionalism throughout their period of duty.
Following the completion of the handover ceremony, the Ghana Air Force guard was formally installed.
