Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza has cautioned drivers and heavily loaded vehicles against using public road shoulders as long-term parking spaces.
According to him, the practice poses a threat to the safety and proper use of public roads, particularly in cities where trucks with foreign registration numbers are left parked on shoulders for extended periods.
The Minister made the remarks during an inspection of works on the 23km Takoradi-Agona junction road on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
“You go round some cities and you see heavily-loaded vehicles with foreign registration numbers parked on the shoulders for weeks,” Mr Agbodza said.
He said the Ministry intends to write to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to consider such vehicles as trespassers on public roads and work with local authorities to address the situation.
“We want to write to IGP to consider all those vehicles as trespassers on the public road and then in collaboration with local authorities take the remedial action against them,” he said.
Mr Agbodza also suggested that authorities could provide designated parking areas for such vehicles and charge a fee to use the facilities.
“Or build places for them and charge them to park there for a fee, that will be the way,” he added.
The Roads Minister stressed the need to keep public roads and their shoulders clear to improve safety and ensure the roads remain accessible to motorists.
“As for the public roads, we need to clear them and keep them safe,” he said.
