Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has narrated how a woman he says claimed to be from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to arrest him after court proceedings on Wednesday.
According to him, the woman confronted him after he had addressed the media and told him he was needed at EOCO, before firmly grabbing his wrist.
Speaking hours after the incident on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the MP said the woman’s grip was unusually strong and he has never encountered a woman that strong before.
“She firmly held my wrist, with the greatest of respect. I’ve never come across a woman that strong before,” he said on JoyNews.
Baffour Awuah said he had to struggle to free himself from her. “She held my hand so tight, so firmly that I had to wriggle myself from her hand,” he said.
According to him, even though he offered to drive to EOCO himself, the woman refused. “She was insistent on resisting me from sitting in my car, but would rather arrest me like a common criminal and put me in their car,” he stated.
He said when he asked the woman to identify herself as an EOCO officer, she could not produce any ID. “What even shows you are from EOCO? She couldn’t even produce it,” he said.
The MP said the development made him suspect it was a kidnapping attempt. “I thought that, look, this is one of the kidnappings that have been going on, state-sponsored kidnappings that have been going on, and so I will not sit in the car,” he added.
He added that he is willing to present himself to EOCO if the proper legal process is followed. “When EOCO is ready to do the right thing, I will go there. I’m not afraid of anything,” he noted.
Baffour Awuah rejected suggestions that he fled to Parliament to evade arrest, describing the attempt as unlawful. “This is an unlawful arrest. An attempt to abduct me by persons who don’t want to work with the law, and so it is not wrong if I’m seeking sanctuary,” he said.
“In fact, you seek sanctuary against kidnappers, and so if I’m seeking sanctuary, it is not wrong,” he added.
