Unity Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has ushered in a new administration following a handing-over ceremony that saw Professor Dr. Akwasi Afrifa Acheampong assume office as Hall Master, succeeding Professor Richard K. Avuglah.
The ceremony also marked the transition of leadership responsibilities to the incoming hall executives.
Outgoing Hall Master, Professor Richard K. Avuglah, in his farewell address, highlighted some of the initiatives undertaken during his tenure, including the installation of security cameras on all floors and at strategic locations within the hall.
He also disclosed that preparations had commenced towards the renovation of all washrooms, urging the incoming administration to ensure the completion of the project.
“I encourage the incoming administration to sustain and strengthen this important initiative,” he said, while expressing confidence in the new leadership.
Professor Avuglah also drew attention to the growing accommodation pressure at Unity Hall, noting that the facility, originally built in 1968 to accommodate 420 students, now houses close to 2,000.
He called on government, private investors, alumni and other stakeholders to support efforts towards providing safe, decent and affordable accommodation for students.
Taking over the leadership, Professor Acheampong urged the incoming executives to approach their new responsibilities with humility and commitment, while seeking the cooperation of students and other stakeholders.
“Election presents both privilege and responsibility. I urge that we all serve with humility and take our oath of office seriously,” he said.
He further appealed to alumni to remain actively involved in the affairs of the hall, emphasising the importance of their experience, mentorship and resources in supporting its development.
With Unity Hall set to celebrate its Golden Jubilee next year, Professor Acheampong expressed optimism about the support of stakeholders in making the anniversary a success.
The incoming Hall Master and his executives subsequently took their oaths of office, formally beginning their tenure.
The leadership transition marks a new chapter for Unity Hall, with the incoming administration expected to build on existing achievements while addressing concerns surrounding infrastructure, accommodation and student welfare.
As the hall prepares for its Golden Jubilee, the new leadership is expected to draw on the cooperation of students, staff and alumni to advance its development and uphold its motto, “Unity is Strength.”
