The Gbese District Court in Accra has sentenced a 27-year-old driver’s mate to three months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone and a cash of GH¢7,000 at Tema Station, a suburb of Accra.

The convict, Edem Avenyo, pleaded guilty to stealing when he appeared before the court. Reports indicate he took a photograph of himself and uploaded it to the complainant’s WhatsApp status, leading to his arrest at his hideout.

In court, Avenyo pleaded with the judge to “tamper justice with mercy and forgive him,” and promised to work and pay the stolen amount and also replace the stolen device.

But the court convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly.

Inspector Isaac Agyemang, the prosecution leader, told the court the complainant is a public transport driver and a resident of Aplaku, a suburb of Accra, while Avenyo, the convict, resides at Arts Centre, also in Accra.

On Friday, October 24, 2025, the complainant parked his vehicle at Tema Station car park behind the National Lotteries Authority and slept in it with his mate, Godwin Owusu.

At about 4:00 am on Saturday, October 25, 2025, the complainant woke up to realise his Samsung Galaxy smartphone valued at GH¢2,900 and cash of GH¢7,000 kept under the vehicle seat had been stolen.

The prosecution said later that morning, Owusu called the complainant’s phone number, which Avenyo answered. Owusu instructed him to return the phone, but he declined.

On Sunday, October 26, 2025, Avenyo took a photograph of himself with the complainant’s phone and uploaded it onto the complainant’s WhatsApp status.

He was subsequently arrested on Friday, December 19, 2025, at his hideout near the COCOBOD area.

During investigations, he admitted stealing the phone and cash, stating that he sold the phone at Nsawam for GH¢800 and spent the GH¢7,000.
