A six-year-old boy identified as Godfred Aboagye, has drowned in an uncovered water storage facility at Wallantu, a suburb of Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East municipality of the Central region.

The Monday, December 29, 2025, incident, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) occurred inside a compound house with House Number CB 180, in the area.

The GNFS reports that the young boy was playing in the area when his ball bounced into the open ground-level water storage tank within the compound.

While attempting to retrieve his ball from the tank, he found it difficult to climb back or stay afloat after entering, succumbing to the water in the process.

In a statement issued by the GNFS on Monday, December 29, it said officers received a distress call at 5:03 p.m. (1703 hours) and a specialised rescue team was immediately dispatched, navigating Kasoa’s traffic to arrive at the scene within 10 minutes.

Despite the swift response—with the recovery operation completed by 5:28 p.m.—it was too late to save the child.

The rescue team recovered Godfred’s body from the depths of the tank and handed him over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further forensic investigation.

The Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu-signed statement pleaded with property owners and guardians not to leave pits and tanks open as they pose a serious health hazard to the public, especially, children.

“GNFS strongly cautions parents, guardians, and property owners to ensure that all water storage facilities, tanks, wells, and pits are securely covered, particularly in homes where children are present,” the statement read.

The Central Regional PRO of the GNFS emphasised in the statement that “preventable tragedies” like this often occur in seconds when children are left unsupervised near unsecured water sources.

The GNFS admonished the public to always count on them in such situations by calling their emergency contact line to save lives.
