The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has slapped Ghana with a $15,000 fine for crowd troubles during the 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening group game at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This followed a fight in the stands between two supporters groups at half time.

Security officers had to use tear gas to restore calm.

The matter was consequently reported by the Safety and Security Officials to Caf’s Disciplinary Board, who took the decision after assessing all the evidence.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to pay the fine within 60 days.

“The Ghana Football Association would like to call on the supporters groups and all Ghanaians who are in Côte d’Ivoire to cheer the Black Stars to put up the best of behaviour within the laws of the game,” the GFA said in a statement.

It added that it “will liaise with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, under whose authority the supporters travelled to the tournament, and the leadership of the supporters groups to avoid any future occurrence”.
