The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ababio, is celebrating the first Akwasidae of 2023 today, Sunday, February 5.

Many have trooped the Manhyia Palace both within and beyond the Asante Kingdom to witness the beautiful culture of the Asanteman.

The meaning and significance of Akwasidae as explained by Monarchical Historian, Osei-Bonsu Safo-Kantanka is based on the days of the week according to the Akan calendar.

Osei-Bonsu Safo-Kantanka [L] is Monarchical Historian in charge of research in history, archaeology, language, culture and tradition for Manhyia.
The word has two syllables ‘Akwasi’ meaning Sunday and ‘Dae’ to wit a place of rest or sleep.

The man who conducts research in history, archaeology, language, culture and tradition for Manhyia explained to Captain Smart during the live telecast of the event told Captain Smart “Akwasidae is where the chiefs sleep and we only go there on Sundays.”

Explaining the significance of the event, he said “we are here to supplicate to the saints to deliver our pleas to God.”

Bogyawe is where the Asantehene will sit during the program. When the king is seated all other sub-chiefs will go and pay homage to him.

He indicated further that “Akwasidae is not a bad festival,” and urged all to endeavour to know much about.”
