The National Peace Council has almost 300 cases before it currently, the Council’s Chairman, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, has disclosed.

The cases, according to the Chairman, ranges from religious to political, ethnic, resource and chieftaincy amongst others.

Out of the number, Dr. Adu Gyamfi says only 24 of them are political, with the rest distributed between the other variables.

The National Peace Council, per the Act that establishes it, is mandated to facilitate and develop mechanisms for conflicts prevention, conflict management and conflict resolution and to build sustainable peace in Ghana.

Speaking on Hot Issues Sunday, March 03,  2024, the Council Chair indicated that “by our mandate, we are supposed to prevent conflict so whenever we see a conflict potential, or we have signals that indicate that these things are likely to lead to a conflict situation, the Council takes interest in that and we do the best we can to intervene in such matters.”

“In terms of direct economics, we have not had cases come to us but currently, we are dealing with cases of land litigation, chieftaincy conflict, resource conflict, political and religious conflict, ethnic issues, there are others that we classify as others and a total of 298 cases currently are on the table of National Peace Council which are being looked at, only 24 of them are political,” Dr. Adu Gyamfi disclosed to sit-in host, Alfred Ocansey.

Meanwhile, he revealed that the Peace Council is liaising with the Asantehene to help bring the Bawku conflict to closure.

“We are also liaising with Otumfuo. In fact, we’ll have a meeting with him very soon. We are waiting for a date that he will be available. So we hope to be in touch with him to see how far his committee can also help to resolve this problem so the Council hasn’t given up on Bawku yet,” he noted.

He has also been explaining to sit-in host, Alfred Ocansey, what they have been doing over the years to sustain the peace in the area.

Bawku killings will become worse if gov’t doesn’t adopt multifaceted approach – Adam Bonaa

“The National Peace Council has been involved in the Bawku issue for years and we had been part of the inter-ethnic tribal committee between the factions that are there and we have managed over the years until this last came up again and then some of the Kusasi withdrew from the inter-ethnic committee. Currently, fortunately we have been able to bring them back and now the Committee is actively working and we are doing everything we can to seek to the resolution of this.

“Currently the issue has escalated beyond a certain proportion and before we can go in, because we don’t have the mandate to arrest and prosecute, it is only when there is peace that we can get in but we have been in and out of the place. We’ve met the Bawku Naba, we’ve met the Nayiri, we’ve met all kinds of people within the area. We’ve met various groups and we are still actively in there,” he said Sunday, March 03, 2024.
