Four suspected illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Skuumu near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central district of the Ashanti region.

The tragic incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, throwing the entire community into a state of mourning.

According to information gathered, the abandoned and depleted galamsey site had recently been handed over by Government to Logist Group Company Limited for reclamation works.

However, the victims allegedly sneaked into the site to engage in illegal mining activities when the pit suddenly caved in, trapping them underground.

Security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, were deployed to the area as rescue efforts began immediately after the incident.

An excavator was later used on Wednesday evening to retrieve the bodies of the deceased from the collapsed pit.

The leader of the deceased has been identified as Solomon Amadevor, with the three others yet to be identified, as investigations into the incident continue.

Residents have described the incident as heartbreaking, raising fresh concerns over the dangers associated with illegal mining activities in the country.
