Newly-crowned 2023 VGMA Artiste of the Year Black Sherif, born Mohammed Ismail Sharrif, has disclosed that he was expecting to win the Album of the Year.

The Album of the Year was won by King Promise’s 5 Star.

Black Sherif joined co-hosts Cookie Tee and Berla Mundi on Monday, May 8, 2023, on TV3′s New Day, where he expressed his feelings about not winning the Album of the Year.

“Obviously, I was waiting to hear my name, but when my name wasn’t mentioned, I said, ‘Yawa’, ” he revealed.

According to ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ hitmaker, he wasn’t disappointed because every nominee in that category deserved an award.

His album ‘The Villain I Never Was’ competed with the likes of ‘Jamz’ by Sarkodie, ‘My Diary’ by Gyakie, ‘Son of Jacob’ by Kwesi Arthur, ‘Kadosh’ by Joe Mettle and eventual winner ‘5 Star’ by King Promise.

King Promise’s win already spiced up some controversies on social media as most people and fans of Black Sherif were certain it was a win for their camp.

From Best Hip-hop Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Hip-life/Hip-hop Artiste, Most Popular Song to the ultimate win of the night, Artiste of the Year, he expressed how happy he was about winning most of the awards he was nominated for.

He disclosed that when the time is right, he will collaborate with other artistes.
