The Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has said the stabilisation of the Ghana cedi is not a responsibility of any sole institution but rather a cause for every citizen.
Speaking at the Cedi@60 Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, he said the collective responsibility of safeguarding the cedi is the surest way to protect the nation’s legal tender.
He urged participants at the Conference, including policymakers, economists and industry leaders to reflect on the currency’s six decades in existence, describing the future of the cedi as a shared national project.
“Protecting the cedi is not the task of any one institution. It is a shared endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” he said, emphasising the need for unity and common purpose in strengthening the currency.
The confidence exuded by citizens in the currency, Dr. Asiama noted, is part of the mechanisms that constitute the cedi’s stability, and not only macroeconomic policies.
According to him, every Ghanaian – from schoolchildren learning to count to traders and entrepreneurs powering local commerce – has a role to play in supporting the currency.
Sharing his outlook for the economy for the next 60 years, Dr. Asiama averred that the future presents an opportunity for the nation to re-imagine the cedi and build a robust, stronger financial system.
He admonished stakeholders to provide a pool of ideas that will shape a monetary future that is resilient.
Calling for a renewed sense of pride in the local currency, he expressed appreciation to the participants for their commitment to the cause.
His remarks set the tone for the conference, which forms part of broader discussions around inflation control, exchange rate stability and long-term economic reforms.
