Residents and businesses across parts of the Ashanti Region are expected to experience improved and more stable electricity supply following the commissioning of 37 new distribution transformers by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti West Region.
The newly installed transformers form part of a nationwide initiative by ECG and the Ministry of Energy to upgrade aging and overloaded electricity infrastructure to meet the growing demand for power.
The project, completed at a cost of more than GHS 10.9 million, involved the upgrading of existing transformers, installation of additional transformers to reduce pressure on overloaded systems, and extension of High Tension and Low Voltage lines in several communities.
The transformers have been installed across the Ahinsan, Abuakwa, Adum, Danyame, Kokoben, Bibiani, Suame and Offinso districts, benefiting communities including Trede SHS area, Kodie Apagya, Nkawie Pakala, Hemang, Bantama Race Course Market, Pakyi No. 1, Esaaso, Buoho, Adiebeba, Bronikrom, Kokoso and Edwenase near the Goil Filling Station, among others.
Speaking on the project, ECG Ashanti West Regional General Manager, Ing. George Amoah, said the investment aligns with the company’s mission of providing reliable, quality and safe electricity supply to support socio-economic development.
“Many of the transformers in the affected communities had reached full capacity, leading to persistent localized outages, low voltage and phase interruptions. ECG upgraded several transformers from 100kVA to 200kVA and from 200kVA to 315kVA, while in some high-demand areas, two 315kVA transformers were installed to meet increasing electricity consumption.”
Ing. Amoah said the project is expected to significantly reduce system losses, improve voltage stability and enhance operational efficiency across the region.
He added that the upgrades will also improve customer satisfaction by ensuring a more reliable and stable power supply for homes, businesses and institutions.
Regional Engineer for Ashanti West, Ing. Emmanuel Osei Amoako, described the commissioning as a major step toward strengthening power distribution infrastructure in the rapidly growing Ashanti Region.
He noted that Kumasi and its surrounding communities continue to witness increasing electricity demand due to urban growth and business expansion, making infrastructure investments critical to sustaining economic activities.
Ing. Amoako further disclosed that ECG has already replaced 36 faulty transformers in areas including Twedie, Patasi Police Depot, Afia Kobi SHS, Denkyemuoso White House and Ampabame Hills.
He revealed that approval has also been secured for the installation of an additional 35 transformers in communities where existing equipment is nearing full capacity.
The ECG officials also used the occasion to caution the public against illegal connections and interference with ECG installations, urging residents to report such activities to the police or the nearest ECG office.
Customers were encouraged to make use of ECG’s digital payment platforms, including the ECG PowerApp and shortcode *226#, as the company continues its transition to a fully cashless payment system.
