Kwesi Nyantakyi’s decision to contest the Ejisu by-election will be morally questionable, anti-Corruption Campaigner, Vitus Adaboo Azeem, has urged the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

He has advised that he reconsider his decision to contest the seat following TigerEye P.I’s Number 12 documentary piece that incriminated him, subsequently leading to his lifetime ban from football which was later reduced to 15 years.

Kwesi Nyantakyi is among the many persons seeking to replace late Deputy Finance Minister, John Ampontuah Kumah, as Member of Parliament for the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti region, in an upcoming by-election occasioned by the demise of the late MP.

Despite admitting that the current laws of the land do not bar Nyantakyi from contesting the seat, he has advised him to weigh the implications since the corruption allegations would linger, regardless of any investigations and prosecutions.

The former Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) says apart from the fact that Nyantakyi has not been able to exonerate himself from the allegations that were leveled against him, his admission to paying money to Anas to kill the documentary indicts him further.

Mr. Azeem says the confession is an admission that the documentary contained some information which was bound to impugn his reputation, the reason he bribed his way to get it concealed.

“No matter, whether he has been prosecuted or not it is a dent on him and it cannot easily be wiped away. It may not be possible to legally bar him from contesting but as somebody interested in parliament, he should even consider contesting for an election.

“It is not even the fact that you come out to admit that you paid money but the mere fact that at the very beginning, he was the key player in the Anas investigations and even though he has not been investigated and prosecuted, he too has not been able to exonerate himself and has now implicated himself by admitting that he paid money to Anas to stop him from airing the expose because it contained information that will further implicate him. If he has a conscience, he should not stand,” he said on Accra-based Citi FM Wednesday, April 03, 2024.

He added also that should Kwasi Nyantakyi win the Ejisu seat, the dent of corruption will resurface any time he gets any government appointment in the future.
