A Howo gas tanker overturned in the early hours of Friday, June 19 after attempting to navigate a pothole on the dual carriageway near Tema Technical Institute, heading towards the Motorway Roundabout.
The incident occurred when the tanker reportedly fell onto its side while the driver was manoeuvring around a damaged section of the road.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), have brought the situation under control.
Authorities disclosed that the truck’s head, bearing registration number 4615-T1-03, has been detached from the tanker and moved to a police station as part of ongoing safety measures.
Although officials have indicated that there is no visible gas leakage from the tanker, residents and businesses within the vicinity have been advised to avoid any activities involving open flames, welding, or other forms of hot work as a precautionary measure.
Arrangements are being made to deploy another Bulk Road Vehicle (BRV) to transfer the gas safely from the overturned tanker.
Motorists using the stretch have also been urged to exercise patience as emergency teams continue operations. Traffic diversions have been implemented, leading to congestion in the area.
