The Sawla camp which served as a safe haven for displaced victims of Gbenyiri conflict has officially been closed down by officials of the National Disaster Management Organsiation (NADMO).

NADMO officials on Thursday, September 18, 2025 dismantled the tents which served as shelter for the thousands of victims.

Savannah Regional NADMO Director, Mahama Zakaria confirmed the closure of the camp to TV3’s Regional Correspondent, Christopher Amoako.

He explained that all displaced victims have returned to their various communities, reason for the disclosure of the camp.

“It is true we are officially closing the camp because almost all of our people here have returned to their communities and we continued to encourage them to go.

“It was yesterday (Wednesday) around 2 pm afternoon that the last batch of people returned,” he stated.

The Gbiniyiri conflict in the Savannah region occurred over a plot of land between two feuding factions resulting in the deaths of about 31 persons and 48,000 displaced.

Mahama Zakaria appealed for more support for victims in Burkina Faso.

“Those in Vonkoro camp, I am reliably informed that most of them are returning to their communities.

“Those at Burkina are also seeking for our support. So, I have contacted my Director-General and the headquarters to see what we can do for them. There’s assurance from my headquarters that some relief items have been dispatched for us to see how we can get it across to support them,” he added.

He called for peace amongst community members in the Savannah Region.

“I will urge our people that we need to give peace a chance and to continue to live peacefully. Conflict, is not the way to go, growth and development is what we need in Savannah Region,” he remarked.
