The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has called on religious leaders in Ghana to join the fight against child labour and trafficking.

Speaking at a dialogue with religious bodies, the Minister emphasized the critical role faith leaders play in shaping values and influencing communities.

The event, held at the Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra, brought together Reverend Ministers, Imams, and faith leaders to discuss ways to end child exploitation in Ghana.

The Minister commended partners like the International Justice Mission for their commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and upholding the rule of law.

Child labour and trafficking are prevalent issues in Ghana, with approximately 2 million children engaged in hazardous work, according to the 2021 National Population and Housing Census.

The Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to enforce laws, strengthen social welfare services, and implement poverty-reducing interventions.

Religious institutions are being called upon to:

– Preach against child exploitation

– Promote children’s rights and dignity

– Support victims and collaborate with authorities to prevent abuse

The government is working with stakeholders, including the International Justice Mission, to intensify awareness campaigns and change attitudes towards child labour and trafficking.
