2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year King Promise has opened up for the first time about a musical partnership that was tragically cut short by the sudden passing of Highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
The music world was plunged into mourning in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, when the iconic Daddy Lumba passed away at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.
Just before his untimely death, rumours of a collaboration were fueled by photos and videos circulating online of him and King Promise, who has often been called the ‘Young Daddy Lumba’.
The prospect of a collaboration between the legendary figure and his modern-day successor had generated immense excitement among fans.
Speaking on TV3′s NewDay in an exclusive and emotional interview, King Promise confirmed the partnership, expressing profound sadness that the project never came to fruition. ,
He recounted the unforgettable experience of being invited into his idol’s home.
It was a surreal moment for King Promise he shared.
“Imagine your idol telling you how amazing you are and how he has looked forward to working with you. We exchanged ideas, and I even left some beats on his laptop. I was there with Killbeatz, and we did some freestyles. The plan was for me to return and properly record everything after my trip to America.”
When asked if he would consider releasing the freestyle sessions they recorded, the artiste was unequivocal in his response.
“I don’t think I will release it,” he stated.
“We didn’t get to fully record; we were just bouncing off ideas on beats. That first meeting was us laying the groundwork. The whole vision was to create and release a surprise album together.”
While the initial freestyles may remain private, King Promise offered a glimmer of hope for fans, hinting that he might one day release their sessions as a tribute to honour the late legend’s memory and their brief, but meaningful, connection.
