A 60-year-old woman, Musah Azaratu Poana, has been murdered by two brothers at Jagna in the West Mamprusi municipality of the North East region over witchcraft accusation.
TV3’s Christopher Amoako reports that, a daughter of the deceased had disclosed the assailants stormed the house and accused her mother of bewitching their father and began firing several shots at her killing her in the process.
Meanwhile, police in the area have launched a manhunt for the two siblings who attacked and killed the 60-year-old woman over the witchcraft accusation.
Ghana’s Parliament has passed a bill to protect people accused of witchcraft, making it a crime to abuse them or send them away from communities.
The new law was suggested after a 90-year-old woman was lynched at Kafaba in the East Gonja municipality of the Savannah region in July 2020, drawing condemnation from local and international rights groups.
Meanwhile, the Tamale High Court in July this year sentenced two women for 12 years imprisonment each for their roles in the killing of 90-year-old Akua Denteh.
90-year-old Akua Dentah was accused of witchcraft and lynched at Kafaba near Salaga in 2020.
The court convicted Hajia Serena Mohammed, and Latifa Bumaye on each of the two counts of manslaughter and sentenced them on Tuesday, July 3, 2023 to run their terms concurrently.
It would be recalled that Akua Denteh was brutally beaten at Kafaba in the East Gonja municipality of the Savannah region on Thursday, July 23, 2020, leading to her death the next day.
Her passing on sparked a reaction across the country where many who were angered by the act called for the arrest and prosecution of the culprits.
Seven suspects were subsequently arrested by the Salaga police including the chief of Kafaba, Seidu Yahaya.
Hajia Serena Mohammed and Latifa Bomaye who had gone into hiding following the incident were later arrested at their hideouts.
